Next, Phil at one point or another strives to be the opposite of what he was in the beginning. He went from being and arrogant, self-centered news caster to being a man for others. Now this whole opposite thing displayed in the movie somewhat manages to compare to what Plato tries to say while answering what a human is. pg According to the movie this is true; he goes from self-center and caring about himself, to caring about others. What Plato is trying to say by this is that if there was no sort of cycle of opposites; good to bad and bad to good, then everything would either be bad or good. If everything were this way than there would be no way to learn. For example, the whole point of Phil repeating his day was for him to do the opposite he did before; to be good. If there was no opposites or if he were to have never repeated his day than he would have never learned from his mistakes and he would have continued to be bad.

Thanks to this idea of opposites, we know that the whole purpose of being human is to try and turn the bad that we did the day before to good. The Allegory of the Cave? mentions many different things. Plato tries to explain the process in which humans learn; through a process called progressive learning. We see this method of learning quite a few times throughout Groundhog Day. For example the first day Phil and Rita are at the bar he looks at it as a shadow because he learns what she like to drink. because Rita usually prays for world peace. This day is like him looking at a reflection of what happened the day before. The third day can be seen as him looking at the object itself.

The sun is what caused us to see and it is the source of everything good. The movie symbolically shows this idea of the sun being the source of all good. If you pay close attention you can see that throughout the movie as Phil repeats the same day over and over again. Those days are always dark and gloomy. Suddenly when he finally breaks free of this curse and moves on the February 3rd we see the sun come out and shine through the windows and on the snow. This essay was written by a fellow student. Pages 16 Words He confesses all the things he has come to love about her and how he does not think he deserves someone like her. Another major selfless act comes when Phil decides to befriend the elderly homeless man on the street. No matter what he does though, the old man always ends up dying. The previously uncaring weatherman is so strongly affected by this event that it ultimately becomes the final turning point in bringing Phil to the end of his journey. By the end of the film, and the final Groundhog Day, Phil is friendly, kind, humble, unselfish, heroic, and polite.

By showing up in the right places at the right times, he saves a boy from being injured when he falls from a tree, helps three elderly ladies with their flat tire, and saves the life of a man who is choking on a piece of steak. Instead of complaining, he makes the most of being stuck in Punxsutawney and even takes part in the festivities. At the party that night, he plays the piano while the crowd dances. Being the life of the party, and receiving so much attention from the townspeople he helped throughout the day, makes Rita take notice of him as well. He has at last achieved his perfect self, a perfect day, and the rest of his life can finally begin. He is shown first as a horrible person who is only concerned for himself. Through the trials and tribulations of repeating the same day in a seemingly endless loop, he is forced to look within himself as the only person able to make any sort of change.

He hits a few bumps along the way and goes through highs and lows, but eventually gets things right. He finds there is more to living than just what is good for him. It becomes clear to him that maybe he is not such a great person and there is perhaps room to change and grow. He becomes increasingly aware that his actions can have a direct, significant, and positive impact on the lives of other people. While all this is going on, he manages to find the happiness he did not even know he was looking for. In the end, Phil is a better person who gets the girl and is well liked by everyone in town. As the classic Bill Murray time-loop romcom reaches 30, and the imitators that reuse its concept keep on coming — from Palm Springs to Russian Doll — we ask what makes it so timeless. Viewed simply as a quirky comedy on its release, the film has since seen its reputation transform. In , its influence and popularity are greater than ever. Some people got it right away. Meanwhile the time-loop romcom has become a popular genre in itself. I knew when I started writing it that there were lots of ways to go with the idea. More than anyone, Rubin understands the impact of his film. Soon after its release he began hearing from Buddhists, German monks, rabbis and Nietzschean philosophy students who all believed Groundhog Day was the perfect allegory for their particular worldview.

The film was a moderate critical and commercial success on release but, despite a push from studio Columbia, it received a grand total of zero Oscar nominations. The presidential comedy Dave got a nomination for best screenplay that year instead. US critic Roger Ebert hit the nail on the head in when he revisited the film for his Great Movies series, admitting he underestimated it on first viewing. As director Harold Ramis foresaw, Murray was the only actor who could make the callous, narcissistic Phil Connors likable to the audience. Rubin also had to act as an early buffer between Murray and Ramis, who had been regular collaborators since the s but fell out during the making of the film. If Murray was forever linked to the role, would people accept another Phil Connors?

Help arrived when Murray joined Rubin to watch the musical during its Broadway run in , offering his tacit approval to the show. I thought they needed permission from him and he was aware of that, so he was doing us a favour. And then he thought it would be funny to come back the second night, sit in the exact same seat, wear the same clothes … So we had two days of press. He was being very generous to the show. after newsletter promotion. This led to rumours that Murray hated the film. Audiences have also come around to understanding that Groundhog Day offers more than first meets the eye. People feel a connection in their own lives — and in society, in politics, in wars and international relations. And the movie not only gives it a name but offers some solutions.

People figure that if Phil can change, maybe they can too. It may be that the lockdown, which trapped people in their own repetitive cycles, helps explain the sharp increase in time-loop romcoms. With Palm Springs in , The Map of Tiny Perfect Things in and Meet Cute in , Hollywood is currently averaging one a year. But the concept has also been used to highlight serious topics such as racism and brutality in the US police force. The Academy Award-winning short film Two Distant Strangers tells the story of a black graphic designer in New York who is shot dead by a police officer, only to wake up and repeat the same trauma every day. In , the even punchier film Groundhog Day for a Black Man — clocking in at four minutes — told a similar tale spiked with bleak humour.

These powerful shorts highlight the versatility of the concept. But the original film went down a different path. The only difference is Phil himself, his attitude and actions. It is an empowering message. Having exhausted indulgence and self-pity, Connors starts to understand he cannot control the world around him, only change how he acts within it. And also that compassion, empathy and helping others without expectation of reward is a route to happiness. These subtle depths help explain why this timeless film about time, which focuses on the tedium of repetition is ironically so endlessly rewatchable.

It has struck a chord for 30 years and, appropriately, Groundhog Day is going absolutely nowhere. Groundhog Day was released in the US in February The musical returns to the Old Vic in May.
